Spread the love

When my brother came back from abroad, he told me he wanted to marry my best friend.

When my brother came back from abroad, he told me he wanted to marry my best friend.

I was so excited.

You would think I had just won a lottery with the way I screamed.

It felt like a dream come true.

You see, even before my brother travelled abroad, he had always had his eyes on my best friend, Chinelo. But he wasn’t the type to rush into things.

He wanted to watch things unfold naturally.

So, he decided to travel, chase his dreams, and see what life had in store for him.

He believed that if Chinelo was truly meant for him, things would eventually work out.

And deep down, I knew that Chinelo loved my brother too.

In fact, we were extremely close.

Chinelo wasn’t just my best friend. Her family was also like our family. We had known each other for far too long, and our families shared a beautiful relationship.

My mother used to call Chinelo her daughter-in-law.

Anytime she visited their house, you would hear my mother and Chinelo’s mother calling each other,

“My in-law!”

“My in-law!”

And they would both burst out laughing.

Their relationship was so close that having Chinelo marry my elder brother was something we had all joked about for years.

So, when my brother finally came back and told me he wanted to marry her, I was beyond excited.

I thought,

Finally! This family has come to stay!

When my brother asked me for Chinelo’s phone number, I gave it to him immediately.

But before doing so, I decided to chat with her because I didn’t want her to think I was the one trying to force anything between them.

I wanted things to happen naturally.

I wanted my brother to do his own part of the work and for both of them to reconnect and get to know each other again, even though they had known each other for years.

So, I sent her a message.

“Chinelo, I gave someone your number. Please, when he calls you, try to speak with him kindly.”

Immediately, she replied,

“What are you up to this girl? This one you are giving someone my number. What’s going on nwata Nwaanyi?”

I laughed.

“You are not a serious person! All I am saying is that when the person calls you, be kind and speak with him. The rest will follow.”

She continued teasing me.

“Hope you didn’t sell me to someone? In fact, how much did they pay you?”

I told her to stop being unserious, and that was where we left the conversation.

Little did I know that my brother had also spoken to my mother.

A few days later, my mother went to visit Chinelo’s mother.

And, as expected, the two women started their usual Amebo.

“My in-law! My in-law!” my mother hailed her.

Chinelo’s mother laughed.

“This in-law that you keep calling me, when will it finally happen with your son?”

They both laughed.

Then my mother told her that my brother had returned from abroad and had asked for Chinelo’s number.

She said,

“It seems God wants this our in-law relationship to finally happen. My son has asked for Chinelo’s number. Who knows? Maybe soon, we will finally become proper in-laws.”

They clapped their hands, laughed, and continued with their excitement.

When my mother came back home and told me what had happened, I laughed.

“Mummy! You didn’t even allow the dust to settle before going to do your Amebo!”

She laughed.

“If only you knew how long I had waited for this opportunity. Chinelo’s family are good people. One of my greatest desires is for my son to marry into a good family. We have known them for far too long.”

She continued,

“If your brother marries Chinelo, it will feel like I am bringing one of my own daughters into the family.”

I nodded.

“That’s true, Mummy. If my elder brother marries Chinelo, it will be like you are gaining another daughter. And for me, it will be like my best friend has officially become my sister.”

We laughed together.

Everything felt perfect.

My brother was excited.

My mother was excited.

I was excited.

And somewhere in my mind, I believed Chinelo would be the happiest person when she found out.

But I had no idea that the very phone call we had all been waiting for would change everything.

One afternoon, my brother returned home after visiting one of his friends.

The moment I saw him, I rushed to ask him a question.

“Brother, have you called Chinelo? How far? What did she say? I know she must be excited to hear from you!”

He looked at me and laughed.

“Who?”

I stared at him.

“Who else? Chinelo, my friend! Why are you acting like this?”

He became quiet for a moment before saying,

“I’m not sure I’ll marry that girl again.”

I froze.

“Ah! What happened?”

He replied,

“Actually, it’s not that I’m not sure. I won’t marry that girl.”

I was shocked.

“Brother, what happened? You were so excited. You told me you wanted to marry her. What changed?”

He sighed.

“I called her on the phone. I was about to introduce myself properly when she cut me off.”

I listened carefully.

“Do you know the first question she asked me?”

I shook my head.

“She asked me what I do for a living. She said it was dependent on her listening to what I had to say.”

I frowned.

“Okay, so what did you tell her?”

“I intentionally told her that I was a nine-to-five worker.”

I nodded.

“Then what?”

He said,

“She responded, ‘Nine-to-five? Holy Ghost fire! I cannot reduce myself to stoop so low to marry someone who works nine-to-five. If you are working in oil and gas or tech, then we can have a conversation.'”

I stood there, speechless.

“Wait, wait, wait. My own Chinelo said that to you?”

He nodded.

“I wish I were lying to you. I even recorded the conversation.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“She didn’t even ask for your name?”

“No. She didn’t care to know my name. She only wanted to know what I did for a living. And when she heard nine-to-five, she dismissed me.”

He shook his head.

“Is nine-to-five not honest work? Where did this girl get this mindset from? I’m surprised.”

I felt terrible.

I was angry, disappointed, and confused.

How could the Chinelo I knew speak like that?

This was someone whose family had been so close to ours. Someone I had always believed would make a wonderful wife to my brother.

“Brother, please, let me talk to her.”

He shook his head.

“There’s no need. Forget about it.”

I tried to convince him, but he had already made up his mind.

And honestly, I couldn’t blame him.

I felt so sad.

It was as if someone had been handed something precious and carelessly thrown it away.

But I still didn’t know how everything would unfold.

Towards evening, my brother said something I wasn’t expecting.

“Forget about what I told you earlier. Let’s just go to Chinelo’s house, give her and her mother some gifts, and come back.”

I looked at him.

“Are you serious?”

He nodded.

And that was how we found ourselves visiting Chinelo’s house that evening.

If you had seen my face, you would have known that I was trying so hard not to cry.

I kept thinking about how someone could have a beautiful opportunity right in front of them and lose it because of their expectations.

When we arrived, Chinelo was so happy to see us.

She hugged my brother, hugged me, and welcomed us warmly.

“Ah! You came back? You didn’t even tell me!”

My brother smiled.

“Yes, I came back.”

We handed her and her mother the gifts we had brought, exchanged pleasantries, and left.

That was all.

We didn’t discuss marriage.

My brother didn’t bring up the phone call.

And Chinelo had no idea what had happened.

We simply went home.

Less than fifteen minutes after we arrived, my phone started ringing.

It was Chinelo.

I picked up.

“Hello, Chinelo. Hope all is well? Did we forget something?”

She immediately said,

“Wait first! My mother just called me aside and asked if your brother said anything to me. She was asking if he had finally come back to talk about marriage.”

I sighed.

“Chinelo, forget about it. It’s late.”

She interrupted me.

“Late for what? Your brother didn’t even say anything to me! But you know I’ve had my eyes on your brother for a very long time.”

I became quiet for a moment.

Then I asked her,

“Chinelo, let me ask you something. About two days ago, did someone call you around the afternoon?”

She replied,

“Yes. One number called me.”

I asked,

“Did you ask the person for his name?”

“No.”

“Did you ask who he was or where he was calling from?”

“No.”

I took a deep breath.

“Chinelo, that was my brother.”

There was silence on the phone.

Then she screamed.

“EHNNNN! WHAT?”

I held the phone away from my ear.

“Chinelo!”

She started shouting.

“Wait! Wait! Wait! Are you saying that was your brother who called me?”

I replied,

“Yes, Chinelo. It was my brother!”

She became speechless.

I couldn’t hold myself back anymore.

“Chinelo, how could you? I gave you hints that someone was going to call you. I told you to speak with the person kindly. You didn’t even bother to find out who was calling you!”

She responded,

“But you didn’t tell me it was your brother!”

I paused.

Then I asked her a question.

“Okay, let me ask you something. If I had told you that it was my brother, would you have acted differently?”

She became quiet.

She had no answer.

Because the truth was that if she had known it was my brother, she probably would have approached the conversation differently.

She had judged the person on the phone based on his occupation before even knowing his name.

And by the time she realized who he was, it was already too late.

My brother eventually travelled back without discussing marriage with Chinelo.

He moved on with his life.

And about a year later, he married another woman.

A sweet, kind-hearted woman who treated him with love and respect.

And Chinelo?

She is still regretting her actions up until today.

Sometimes, she thinks about that phone call and wishes she had handled things differently.

She wishes she had asked for his name.

She wishes she had given him a chance to speak.

But life doesn’t always give us the opportunity to go back and correct our mistakes.

Sometimes, a single decision can close a door we never even knew was opening.

And that was exactly what happened to my best friend.

The man she had known for years.

The man she had once admired.

The man she could have built a life with.

He called her on the phone.

But she never knew it was him.

And before she found out, she had already made a decision.

What a painful lesson.

MORAL OF THE STORY

1. Never judge a person solely by their occupation or financial status.

There is dignity in honest work.

Whether someone works a nine-to-five job, runs a business, works in tech, or operates in oil and gas, their occupation should not be the only measure of their worth.

Money and status can change, but character, kindness, and integrity are qualities that matter in building a lasting relationship.

2. Don’t allow your expectations to make you lose a valuable opportunity.

Sometimes, what we have been praying for may come in a form we never expected.

When we become too focused on what we want, we may fail to recognize what is already standing right in front of us.

3. Get to know people before judging them.

Chinelo didn’t reject a man she knew.

She rejected a stranger because of what she assumed about his occupation.

And unfortunately, that stranger turned out to be the very man she had always wanted.

Sometimes, the person we are looking for may already be closer than we think.

The question is:

Will we recognize them before it’s too late?
