Spread the love

The day my husband lost his job, my family told me to leave him before poverty swallowed me too.

The day my husband lost his job, my family told me to leave him before poverty swallowed me too.

I still remember the exact words my aunt said.

“You’re still young.”

“You don’t have children yet.”

“If you leave now, another man will marry you.”

The funny thing was…

Nobody knew I had already made my decision.

I wasn’t leaving.

Not because life was easy.

But because I remembered the promise I made before God.

When I married Daniel, he wasn’t a millionaire.

He was simply a hardworking man with a stable job.

Life wasn’t luxurious, but we were comfortable.

We paid our bills.

We laughed.

We planned our future.

Then one email destroyed everything.

The company where my husband had worked for nine years shut down unexpectedly.

Just like that…

He became unemployed.

The first few weeks, we were hopeful.

He submitted applications everywhere.

Attended interviews.

Nothing came.

One month became three.

Three months became six.

Our savings disappeared.

The car was sold.

We packed out of our apartment and moved into a small one-bedroom flat.

That was when the phone calls from my family increased.

“My daughter, how long will you continue suffering?”

“Your husband has become a liability.”

“Love doesn’t pay bills.”

Every conversation ended the same way.

“Come back home.”

To make matters worse, my elder sister told my ex who was stinkingly rich about my husband’s present condition, and my Ex saw it as an avenue to show his face daily as he pleaded that I divorce my husband and come be with him.

While everyone wished we would come back together, I warned my Ex and stick to my husband.

But sincerely, it wasn’t easy.

Every night, I looked at my husband kneeling beside our bed, praying even when he had every reason to complain.

I saw a man who refused to steal.

A man who refused to cheat.

A man who refused to give up.

I couldn’t abandon that kind of man.

Instead, I joined him.

I started selling homemade snacks.

He began repairing people’s furniture from our compound.

We survived one day at a time.

Sometimes we ate once a day.

Sometimes neighbours quietly helped us.

We never stopped believing.

One afternoon, an elderly man brought an old broken dining table for my husband to repair.

Daniel fixed it so beautifully that the man couldn’t believe it was the same table.

Before leaving, he asked,

“Who taught you this level of craftsmanship?”

My husband smiled.

“I taught myself.”

The old man nodded and left.

We didn’t think much of it.

Three weeks later…

The same man returned.

This time, he wasn’t carrying furniture.

He was carrying opportunity.

He owned one of the biggest furniture companies in the state.

He had quietly investigated my husband after seeing his honesty and skill.

Instead of offering him a job…

He offered him a partnership.

Within a year, our lives completely changed.

Our furniture brand became known across different states.

Hotels, schools and companies began placing large orders.

God restored everything we had lost…

And gave us even more.

One Sunday after church, my family visited unexpectedly.

The same people who once begged me to leave my husband now praised him everywhere they went.

My aunt hugged him tightly.

“My son, we’ve always known you would make it.”

I smiled.

Not because I believed her.

But because I realised something.

People often celebrate the harvest they never helped to plant.

That evening, after everyone left, I asked my husband,

“Do you remember everything they said about you?”

He smiled.

Then he answered with words I’ll never forget.

“If I keep looking back at those who doubted me, I won’t see where God is taking me.”

At that moment…

I understood that success isn’t the best revenge.

Peace is.

Forgiveness is.

Moving forward without bitterness is.

Today, whenever people admire our story, they think the greatest miracle was the business.

It wasn’t.

The greatest miracle was that hardship never changed our hearts.

Because money can change your address…

But only God can preserve your character.

Moral 1: Never abandon people simply because they’re passing through a difficult season. Sometimes the person struggling today is only one opportunity away from a completely different life.

Moral 2: Success is sweeter when it doesn’t leave bitterness in your heart. Forgive those who doubted you, keep moving forward, and let your life be the testimony.

We refused to open our door to our elder brother when he lost everything.
