The day my classmates thought i had a boyfriend in jss1 because of one stupid mistake
Till today, I still don’t understand how a simple handwriting mistake turned me into the biggest gist of my entire secondary school.
I was in JSS1 then.
Small girl.
Innocent.
The only relationship I had was with my school bag, because that thing was always following me everywhere. 😂
I had one close friend in class called Sandra.
That girl knew everything about me.
The food I liked.
The teachers I feared.
The students I secretly disliked.
She was basically my gist partner.
One Monday morning, our English teacher asked everyone to write a composition titled:
My Future Ambition.
Everybody started writing.
Some people wanted to be doctors.
Some wanted to be lawyers.
Some wanted to be pilots.
Me, I wrote mine with full confidence.
I said I wanted to become a nurse.
After writing, I drew a small heart beside my name because I was just playing around.
You know how children used to decorate their notebooks back then.
No meaning.
No hidden message.
Just vibes. 😂
But unfortunately, that was the day my handwriting decided to betray me.
The heart I drew looked like the letter “O.
And beside my name, I had written:
Chisom loves…
Then I was supposed to continue with my ambition.
But before I could finish, Sandra collected my notebook.
She looked at it.
Then she looked at me.
Her eyes opened wide.
“Chisom… who is this person?”
I was confused.
“What person?”
She pointed at the page.
“You wrote Chisom loves O…”
I laughed.
“That is not what I wrote!”
But this girl had already entered detective mode.
“No, no, no. Don’t worry. I understand.”
Understand what?
Even I didn’t understand! 😂
The next day, I noticed something strange.
My classmates were behaving differently.
Two girls were whispering when I passed.
Some boys were laughing.
One boy even told his friend,
See her. She has started early.
I ignored them.
Until break time.
I went to sit with Sandra like usual.
Immediately, one girl stood up and carried her food away.
I was shocked.
Why are you moving?
She said,
Nothing.
But her face was saying everything.
I looked around.
Everybody was acting strange.
Then one of my friends came close and whispered,
Is it true?
I asked,
Is what true?
She looked around before saying,
That you have a boyfriend.
I almost fell from my chair.
Boyfriend? Me?
She nodded.
Yes. We heard.
I started laughing.
But nobody laughed with me.
That was when I knew something serious had happened.
Apparently, Sandra had told one person.
That person told another person.
That person added her own version.
Before you know it, the whole JSS1 believed I had a secret boyfriend.
And the funniest part?
Nobody knew who the boy was.
Everybody was just creating their own story.
One person said he was a senior student.
Another person said he was not even in our school.
One girl even said she saw me smiling at somebody after school.
Meanwhile, I was smiling because a goat almost entered my mother’s shop that morning. 🤦🏽♀️😂
Things got worse when my class teacher heard the rumour.
One afternoon, she called me.
Chisom, is there something you want to tell me?
I was confused.
No ma.
She looked serious.
Are you sure?
Yes ma.
She sighed.
Young girls these days…
At that moment, I realised this thing had gone too far.
I wanted to explain.
But I didn’t even know where to start.
How do you explain that a small drawing of a heart had created a whole relationship that didn’t exist? 😂
The final embarrassment came during assembly.
The principal warned students about distractions.
Then he said,
“Some students are already thinking about relationships instead of their studies.”
Immediately, some of my classmates turned and looked at me.
I wanted the ground to open.
Me?
A JSS1 student?
A relationship influencer?
I couldn’t even pronounce some words in English properly! 😂
That evening, I confronted Sandra.
“Sandra, what exactly did you tell people?”
She looked guilty.
“I only told Amaka that you wrote someone’s name.”
“Which someone?”
She brought out my notebook.
When I looked at it again, I started laughing.
The “love” she saw was actually my drawing.
And the letter she thought was a name was just my unfinished sentence.
This girl had built a whole love story from nothing.
The next day, Sandra had to announce in class that she misunderstood everything.
Everybody laughed.
Some people apologized.
But till today, some of those students still remembered me as the JSS1 girl who had a boyfriend before she even knew what dating meant. 😂
Looking back now, I laugh.
But that experience taught me something.
In secondary school, your classmates don’t need evidence before creating a story.
Give them one small mistake, and they will build a full movie around it.
Morals:
Be careful with the stories you spread. A small misunderstanding can damage someone’s reputation.
And before believing rumours about people, always find out the truth first.
If this story made you laugh, kindly share. ❤️
