Spread the love

I knew my husband was cheating on me, when he started sneaking out to take his calls.

I knew my husband was cheating on me, when he started sneaking out to take his calls.

So, the first time my husband took his phone into the bathroom, I didn’t think much of it.

The second time, I noticed.

By the tenth time, I was already creating stories in my head.

My husband, Daniel, had never been the type to hide his phone from me.

For the first eight years of our marriage, his phone could be lying anywhere in the house.

On the dining table.

Beside his pillow.

Even in the sitting room when he went upstairs.

If a call came in and he was in the bathroom, I could pick it up and tell the person, “He’ll call you back.”

There was nothing secretive about him.

Until one Monday morning.

I was preparing breakfast when his phone rang.

“Daniel, your phone is ringing.”

He rushed out of the bedroom.

“I’ll take it.”

I looked at him.

“Okay.”

He picked up the phone, glanced at the screen and walked outside.

Not just outside the kitchen.

He walked all the way to the compound.

That was when something inside me shifted.

When he returned, I asked casually,

“Who was that?”

“Someone from work.”

“Which person?”

He looked at me.

“Why are you asking?”

I laughed.

“Ah-ah. Am I not your wife again?”

“You are.”

“Then why are you behaving like I’m your creditor?”

He smiled, but the smile didn’t reach his eyes.

“Nothing is wrong.”

I wanted to believe him.

I really did.

But women know when something changes.

Two weeks later, things became worse.

He started changing his password.

Then he changed it again.

He stopped leaving his phone unattended.

If he was bathing, the phone was in the bathroom.

If he was eating, the phone was beside his plate.

And whenever I came close while he was typing, he locked the screen.

One evening, I walked into the sitting room unexpectedly.

He immediately turned off the phone.

I stopped.

He looked at me.

I looked at him.

Neither of us spoke.

Finally, I asked,

“Who were you talking to?”

“No one.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Daniel, I just watched you typing.”

“I said no one.”

Something in his voice made my heart sink.

“Are you cheating on me?”

His face changed.

“What?”

“Are you cheating on me?”

He stood up.

“Is that what you think of me?”

“What am I supposed to think when you suddenly started behaving like this?”

“You are imagining things.”

“Then show me your phone.”

Silence.

That silence answered more questions than his mouth ever could.

I stepped closer.

“Give me your phone.”

“No.”

I stared at him.

“No?”

“I said no.”

That night, we slept on opposite sides of the bed.

I barely slept.

I kept wondering who my husband was talking to.

The next morning, I followed him when he left for work.

I felt ashamed of myself, but I needed to know the truth.

He drove for almost forty minutes before stopping at a small café.

A young girl was already waiting for him.

The moment she saw him, she stood up.

Daniel walked straight to her.

They hugged.

My heart dropped.

“So this is it,” I whispered.

I wanted to enter that café and confront them, but I stopped myself.

Instead, I drove home.

When Daniel returned that evening, I was waiting for him.

“Who is Sarah?”

He froze.

That was all I needed.

“Who is Sarah?” I asked again.

He slowly sat down.

“Please, let me explain.”

“Explain what?”

He rubbed his face.

“Sarah is my daughter.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“My daughter.”

“You don’t have another daughter.”

“I didn’t know I had her.”

I became silent.

Daniel looked at me.

“Before I met you, I was involved with a woman. We separated and lost contact. I had no idea she was pregnant.”

He paused.

“I only found out about Sarah recently.”

I sat down slowly.

“Then why have you been hiding her from me?”

“Because I didn’t know how to tell you.”

He looked down.

“Her mother died recently. Sarah found me after she died.”

My heart softened, but I was still angry.

“And you’ve been secretly meeting her?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she has nobody.”

He swallowed.

“She just found out that I’m her father, and I don’t know how to make up for the years I wasn’t there.”

I looked at him.

“Then why didn’t you tell me from the beginning?”

“I was scared.”

“Scared of what?”

“That you would think I betrayed you.”

I shook my head.

“You already made it look like you were having an affair.”

“I know.”

He looked genuinely sorry.

“I was trying to find the right time to tell you.”

Before I could answer, someone knocked on the door.

Daniel stood up.

When he opened it, Sarah was standing there.

Her eyes were swollen from crying.

“Daddy…”

Daniel immediately pulled her into his arms.

“Daddy, I’m sorry if my coming has gotten you into trouble, believe me I never intended for such” he whispered as she cried.

I stood there watching them.

This was the girl I had thought was stealing my husband.

But she wasn’t.

She was his daughter.

A young girl who had just lost her mother and had only recently discovered the identity of her father.

Sarah looked at me.

“I’m sorry, ma.”

I didn’t know what to say.

Then I walked toward her.

“You don’t have to apologize.”

She started crying again.

And that was when I realized something.

I had spent weeks preparing myself to fight another woman for my husband.

But the woman I thought was my husband’s secret lover was actually a young girl who had come looking for the father she never knew.

I turned to Daniel.

“You should have told me.”

“I know.”

“Don’t ever hide something like this from me again.”

He nodded.

“I won’t.”

I looked at Sarah.

“Come inside.”

She hesitated.

“Are you sure?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

She walked into our house.

And that was how the biggest misunderstanding of my marriage ended.

Not with an affair.

Not with betrayal.

But with a young girl finding the father she never knew she had.

And a wife learning that sometimes, the truth can look very different from the story we create in our heads.

Sarah eventually became part of our family.

She was respectful, humble, and loving toward my children. In no time, they started seeing her as their big sister, and she treated them like her younger siblings.

I must confess, whoever raised Sarah raised her well.

I welcomed her with open arms, and she never gave me a reason to regret it. Instead, she became a beautiful addition to our family.

Looking back, I realized that I had spent so much time suspecting my husband when all he was trying to do was take responsibility for a daughter he had only just discovered.

Sarah didn’t come into our family to take anything away from us.

She came with more love.

And today, I

am grateful that I didn’t allow my suspicion to make me reject someone who eventually became a blessing to our family.

 MORALS

1. Never judge a situation before you know the full truth. What looks like betrayal may sometimes be something completely different.

2. Sometimes, the people we least expect can become the greatest blessings in our lives.
